Sampaguita Flower

Description and Rationale

Sampaguita flower is a kind of jasmine shrub with small white flowers adopted as the national flower of the Philippines and Indonesia. It blooms all year round, with white, small, dainty star-shaped blossoms and had a distinct sweet fragrance.

The Sampaguita flower is not only the national flower of the Philippines but it is also used for making perfume, soaps, lotions, and tea. The Sampaguita is said to be a symbol of purity, devotion, and fidelity. The Sampaguita is widely grown throughout the tropics as an ornamental plant because of its elegant white color and pleasant smell. In the Philippines, the flowers are gathered and strung into a leis and are made as crowns or corsages, they are sold in stores, streets, and outside churches. These garlands may be used to welcome guests, or as an offering or adornment in religious altars. The Sampaguita flower is not poisonous, but only harmful to those who are allergic to it. The reason I chose to do my project on this topic is because it seemed to be interesting and I wanted to find out why they chose it as there national flower and also how it could be used for medical reasons.

Morphology and Physical Description

The Sampaguita flower is classified as an evergreen shrub and it can grow up to 1-3 meters tall. The leaves are opposite (not pinnate). The flowers are produced in groups of 3-12 together, and have a strong smell; they contain a white corolla, which is 2-3 cm, with 5-9 lobes. These flowers open up at night and close during the day. They also contain a little fruit berry that is 1 cm in diameter and is a black purple color.  The flower has a soft velvety feeling to it and is real small. The 2 stamens on the Sampaguita are included with a 2-celled ovary.

Getting Food

They feed of the nutrients in the soil, and need lots of photosynthesis for their growth.  The plants are both full sun and shade tolerant. For the flower blooming the plant needs a lot of sunlight.

Reproduction

In the Sampaguita flower the 2 stamens on the Sampaguita are included with a 2-celled ovary.

Sampaguita flowers do not bear seeds; therefore the plant is cultivated by cuttings.

Cuttings: you cut part of the stem or the leaf or whatever you can replant, it can be a leaf then you cut it from the mother plant and get the cut part and plant it in a different pot and it will almost be a clone of the mothering plant.

Environmental Factors

As a tropical plant the sampaguita loves heat, it grows the best when the soil around it is moist but not soggy. The sampaguita needs lots of sunlight to grow, but once it is plucked from the ground it only lives for about a day then it shrivels up.

Origin and Distribution

The Species Jasminum Sambac is native to southern Asia, in India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. Sampaguita was imported into the Philippines in the 17th century from Himalayan areas. The Sampaguita is a native part of the Philippine landscape for centuries. The plant is originally from India and is grown throughout India today. About eight cultivars are generally listed for Sampaguita. Some varieties of Sampaguitas can grow as large as small roses in India.

Importance to People

The sampaguita has many uses, but is mainly used for teas, and religious offerings. It is used for decorations, corsages, necklaces, deodorant scents, oils, shampoos and other herbal uses. The root of the Sampaguita is known to treat snakebites and wounds. The leaves and flowers contain an antipyretic (fever reducing drug) and decongestant (substance that relieves mucus congestion of the upper respiratory tract. properties. Many Filipino kids sell these on the side of the roads to put in your cars for good smell, and to hopefully get money to eat a meal for the day.

Survivability and Endangered Status

The Sampaguita flower is plentiful and is not considered an endangered species. It is growing plentiful in Southern Asia and is a helpful plant/flower for the Phililppines. The tropical climate is a great for the plant and it produces in abundance.

Potential Solutions

Possibility 1

Just begin by teaching the Filipino people about the plant. Make a little booklet or powerpoint to teach them about the plant. The Sampaguita is a very useful plant and has many great things about it.

The Sampaguita flower is a useful flower in the Philippines. It is easily grown in the tropical climate of the Philippines and it grows abundantly. This flower has many good uses and that’s what ill be telling you about in my next section. Ill be telling you about the advantages and disadvantages of the Sampaguita flower. There are not really any disadvantages of growing and using the Sampaguita for different purposes. But there are quite a few advantages of growing the sampaguita and its uses in the Philippines.

Possibility 2

This is where I performed my action step. I went to McDonalds down in Davao City before and this is where these little kids always sell sampaguita flowers on a string and so we asked them some questions about this. So here’s the story. The Lions Club of Davao helps underprivileged kids to sell fresh Sampaguita on strings. The Lions Club provides the fresh Sampaguita an the string. Then the parents of older kids string the flowers early in the morning or early afternoon. After school the children go to different areas of the city and sell the flowers for ten pesos a piece. Many of the children are as young as 6 to and they go up into Early teen ages. Some nights they may work until after 10pm to try an sell all their flowers. Each child usually sells between 20 to 30 sets of Sampaguita. So by the end of the day they usually end up making 200 to 300 pesos a day if they sell them all. Sampaguita flowers are used by people as natural air fresheners for their cars and as necklaces. It seems that the Sampaguita flower is not always available, so there are times in the year that the kids have nothing to sell.

Advantages:

1.      This program called the Lions Club is really helpful in trying to help the pinoy children to ear money and learn how to work hard and have responsibility. This seems like a pretty easy way to earn money and it is a way for the children to be able to help out their families by working and earning money. The price of the Sampaguita is pretty good for selling and if you end up earning 200 to 300 pesos that is going to be really helpful to the child and their family.

2.      The process of collecting the Sampaguita and stringing them is a really simple task and can be done in a quick amount of time so you can get out early in the morning and start selling an earn some money.

Disadvantages:

1.      The amount of money earned for that day may seem like a lot to the pinoy kids but really it isn’t too much, but it is still helpful.

2.      Sometimes the children end up working really late at night to sell their flowers and stay out past ten, so that is not so safe for little kids to be staying out so late. One last disadvantage is that the Sampaguita flower is not always available so sometimes the kids have nothing to sell and they don’t have a way to earn money or stay out of trouble.

Possibility 3

The Sampaguita is used in many different ways. It can be used to make soaps, shampoos, perfumes, air spray, and produce different oils. There are many different processes in which to make all these different things. The root of the sampaguita is also known to treat snakebites and wounds.

Advantages:

1.The Sampaguita is the main ingredient for making all these different products and the good thing is that the sampaguita produces abundantly. The Filipinos make perfumes, oils, and Sampaguita scented candles and then sell them an get profit. So the Sampaguita is a good source of making all these different products which then allows the Filipinos to be able to sell them and earn money for the family.

         2.   Also the root of the Sampaguita is also known to treat snakebites and wounds, and this is a cheaper method of using medicine an can help the Filipino people heal their wounds or snakebites.

Disadvantages:

1. It might be expensive to get all the ingredients to make all the different products. And when the sampaguita isn’t abundantly growing when its not in season it might be a problem because you cant produce the different scented oils, shampoo’s an etc without the Sampaguita.

BIBLICAL RATIONAL

In the bible flowers are said to represent many different things. In Ephesians 5:2 it says,"and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as as fragrant offering and Sacrifice to God." This verse represents Gods love for us and how he gave his son as a fragrant offering so that we could have eternal salvation. Flowers are also represented as offerings or signs of love. In the book of Solomon it describes the pleasant fragrance and how there wonderful smell spreads a welcoming aroma. It also talks about how flowers are used to decorate the temples. In the book of John it also talks about when Mary brought expensive perfume into the place were Jesus was, she put the perfume on his feet and rubbed it with her hair and the fragrance of the perfume filled the whole room. In 1st Peter 1:24 it says, "For all men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field, the grass withers and the flowers fall." This represents that mankinds existence on earth is here today and gone tomorrow. Just like the flower it only lives a short time to show its beauty but it wilts and is dead by the next day.
